Hypnotherapy for Sleep Disorders
Sleep problems are surprisingly common and generally occur at a stressful point in our lives such as before a big event or following a traumatic event. Often our sleep problems will only last for a short period of time and within a few days or weeks we will revert to our normal sleep patterns, this is called transient insomnia.
Chronic Insomnia however is a much more debilitating condition and is characterised by the sufferer experiencing severe sleep problems for weeks, months or even years.
The symptoms can include difficulty getting to sleep at night or problems staying asleep for a reasonable period of time. Alternatively the sufferer may have difficulties getting back to sleep once they have woken during the night or then may find themselves waking up too early each day. A lack of sleep can have a huge impact on our lives as it creates tiredness, irritability and problems with our concentration which can lead to further medical issues in the future.
There are numerous reasons why your sleep may be disrupted but the most common are outlined below.
Depression
Can impact sleep patterns by making us sleep too much or too little.
Environmental Issues
This can include noise in the street or the temperature being too hot or cold.
Medical Conditions
Arthritis and high blood pressure are conditions which can have an impact on sleep.
Pain
Any form of pain can prevent sleep.
Stimulants
This can include caffeine as well as alcohol or drugs.
Stress and Anxiety
Money, work or family worries
A hypnotherapist can help by working with you to firstly identify the underlying cause for the sleep problem. Once this has been identified then work can begin on relaxation techniques, stress management methods and lifestyle changes which can break any existing patterns.
I will always make sure that I put in place a good sleep routine with my clients as well as checking that any environmental issues are addressed where possible. Where appropriate self-hypnosis can also be taught so that you have the tools at your disposal to create these feelings of relaxation and calm whenever you wish.
