Hypnotherapy for Birth (Hypnobirthing)
Hypnobirthing is currently one of the most talked about therapies in the news this year with articles appearing almost daily in the papers discussing its merits. The media are slowly waking up to the fact that self hypnosis carried out by women in labour can have major advantages such as enabling safer births for both women and babies as well as reducing the need for costly drug treatments such as epidurals.
The major advantage of using hypnotic techniques during the birth process is that the mother can take back control over the whole process of labour. This will allow you to have the birth that you want and not the birth that others want you to have. At my hypnotherapy for birth courses I teach women deep relaxation techniques which enable them to feel calm so that they can block out pain. No therapist can guarantee a pain free birth but you can be guaranteed that you will feel calm, in control and fully prepared enabling natural childbirth where possible. If you want to have pain relief then you can have it safe in the knowledge that you made the decision whilst you were in control and not because somebody else made you have it.
Remain calm and control pain with hypnobirth
My courses are very much concerned with preparation for the birth as well as pain reduction. The course will teach you to relax using hypnosis techniques. This does not mean that you will be in a state of hypnosis when giving birth but it does mean that you will be able to remain calm which often means a quicker delivery. When we are fearful or stressed our bodies automatically enter into the fight or flight response. When our bodies enter this state labour can start to slow down or stop completely. The use of self hypnosis techniques can prevent your body ever entering into this state so that you remain calm and relaxed.
This hypnotherapy for birth course is designed for both the mother and their birthing partner and you will both be required to practice parts of this course at home. This is important as it allows the techniques to become second nature to you as well as making the birthing partner a central part of the process so that they can assist you to focus on what you have been taught whilst in labour.
Courses typically run for three sessions starting when the expectant mother is around 30 weeks with follow up sessions at two week intervals. Although this is the optimal scenario good results can still be achieved in a different time frame so feel free to call to discuss the options.
